1876-His death is recorded at the NJ State Archives, deaths 1876-77, reel #53, vol BC, Camden, p 121: Death #260, Joseph R Hammel [sic], died 12 Sep 1876 at Camden, male, married, 53, born NJ, parents and occupation not given, died from dropsy, recorded 11 Oct 1876.

He left no will, but an estate to be administered. The Administrator had to file a bond to make the inventory of the estate. It is located at the Camden Co Surrogate Office, bond book C p19: J Williard Morgan and Randall E Morgan of Camden were bonded at $137 on 12 Oct 1876 as administrators of the goods and chattles of Joseph R Hammell deceased, to make the inventory.

The Letters of Administration of his estate are filed at the Camden Co Surrogate Office, docket LA, vol C p19. It states: I, David B Brown, Surrogate, certify on 20 Oct 1876 Administration of goods and chattels, rights and credits which were of Joseph R Hammell late of Co Camden who died intestate [without a will] was granted to J Willard Morgan of Co of Camden, who is duly authorized to Administer.

The inventory of Joseph's estate is filed at the Camden Co Surrogate Office, docket IN, vol E p 390. It states: Inventory and Appraisement of personal property of Joseph R Hammell late of Co Camden made by J Willard Morgan, Administrator, and Harry Litchfield and John Hobson, two disinterested freeholders this 20th Oct 1876, in the dwelling house #932 Newton Ave middle room 1st floor:

On 19 Jan 1877 the Administrator of his estate had to file another bond for the sale of his goods, filed at the Camden Co Surrogate Office, bond book C p49: J Willard Morgan, Daniel H Condit? and Edward N Cohn of Camden are bound unto the Ordinary of the State of NJ for $500 to administer the money from the sale of goods and chattels of Joseph R Hammell, directed by order of the Orphan's Court of Camden.
