Introduction
Welcome to my father's family!

This ahnentafel report shows the first 99 generations of ancestors of Patrick Mostyn that I know of so far. At first, my father's ancestors are mostly Irish and Welsh, but as one goes further back in time, there are many English and other European ancestors.

The report begins with my father, called the source, and moves backward in time describing his ancestors. Each ancestor is assigned a unique number, beginning with 1 for the source person. To find the father of a person in an ahnentafel report, double the number. To find the mother of a person, double the number and add 1. There is a symbol beside the name of each person in this report for whom there is a parent. Clicking on the symbol will bring you to the parents of that person. My genealogy software limits the number of generations in an ahnentafel report to 99. Since there are more than 99 generations, the older ancestors will have their own ahnentafel reports.

This database was created to memorialize the family I love, to share the results of my family history research, and to make it easy for unknown cousins to connect up with our family.

The easiest way to get into this family is to start with the index or list of surnames.

The first people to use Mostyn as a last name were Thomas and Piers Mostyn, sons of Richard ap Hywel and Katherine Salusbury, of Wales. They began to use the name about 1539. Thomas Mostyn had 19 children; Piers Mostyn had 13. Both of them had sons who went to Ireland. Our branch of the Mostyn family came from Wales and settled in Ireland. So far, I have not been able to figure out whether our branch descended from Thomas or Piers Mostyn. However, we definitely have descended from their parents, Richard ap Hywel and Katherine Salusbury, the ancestors of almost every living Mostyn!

Since I have not yet been able to figure out whether we descend from Thomas or Piers Mostyn, I have arbitrarily connected our oldest known Mostyn ancestor in Ireland to the closest in time descendant of Richard ap Hywel and Katherine Salusbury who went to Ireland. I have added two generations of "uncertain Mostyns" to connect them. You will notice a few of the ancestors have an * after the first name. These are people who may or may not be our ancestors, depending on whether my arbitrarily chosen ascent to Richard ap Hywel and Katherine Salusbury is correct.

Please keep in mind that the further back in time one goes, the more likely the sources are based on oral history.

My family research is far from complete, so changes will be made from time to time. If you think you might be related, if you know of more information, or if you have noticed any mistakes, please contact me at judy@mostyn.com.

Enjoy!
